Township to embark on parks, recreation survey

Posted February 13, 2018

In addition to the 2018 property tax bill to be mailed out this month, Adjala Tosorontio will insert a parks and recreation survey to determine the demand for new recreational facilities.

The two page questionairre will also be posted online via Survey Monkey.

Adjala Tosorontio council has stepped up its planning process following a failure to reach a renewed reciprocal agreement with New Tecumseth; a deal that provided the Township's residents full access to the Town's facilities for an annual contribution Since 1991 which started at $15,500 per year. In 1994 that increased to $20,500, climbing to $75,000 in 2004. The increases reflected a 3.4 per cent share of the Town's net operating budget for PR&C each year. The Township's fee jumped as part of the NTRC development, as well as improvements to Tottenham's recreation facilities, which increased the budget.

Adjala-Tosorontio balked at paying the Town's rate in 2008, and the two communities have been at loggerheads since. At one point, the Township was $300,000 in arrears.

Non-residents of New Tecumseth face surcharges when using its recreation facilities.

Question topics include whether the Township should rely on on neighbouring municipalities; whether there would be interest to develop a multi-use facility; and whether increasing municipal taxes to fund the facilities would be acceptable.

The hard copy surveys are due by April 3, 2018.
