Hornets take first gamePosted March 22, 2008The first one's in the books with Alliston winning at home 6-3 to take a 1-0 best of seven quarter final lead heading into Sunday's Game 2 in Walkerton at 7 p.m. Walkerton and Alliston, which have never played each other, have developed a quick rivalry, which blew up with less than a minute left in the game when tempers flared and the final few seconds took a few minutes to complete. Jon Porretta got the win in net. Game summary below. Third Period Summary: The Hornets' Zenon Byblow was awarded a Penalty Shot but missed his attempt to keep the score at 2-0. Less than a minute later, Walkerton's Mike Roloefsen assisted by Curtis Johnston at 4:35, slipped one past Hornets' goalie Jon Porretta, to make it 2-1. Ronan's 5th penalty of the game, this time for crosschecking, proved costly as the Hawks scored on the ensuing powerplay to tie the game at 2-2. Then less than 10 seconds later on the following series, the Hornets came back to take the lead again on a goal by Byblow at 7:31 assisted by Faris. About 30 seconds later, Kyle McDowell added his first of the series, assisted by Byblow and Faris, to make it 4-2. Algar, breaking in alone, got crossed up, but got the puck back, put it on net, where Jason Farquar was waiting to pounce on the puck to give the Hornets a 5-2 lead. Jason Campeau, who had skated in late for a face off, barely had time to set up, when the puck found his stick, and he found the net on the powerplay with just over five minutes to play to make it 6-2. The Hawks Trevor Smith got one back on the powerplay to make it 6-3. Second Period Summary:Thomas Faris scored at 19:19 of the second period, assisted by Kurtis Brossard and Kyle Montpetit to put the Hornets up 2-0. Ryan Algar opened the scoring at 8:20 of the second period on the powerplay assisted by Jason Campeau. Physical play picked up in the second, which was marked by the number of penalties: Walkerton 32 minutes on 12 infraction(s) Alliston 30 minutes on 11 infraction(s). First Period Summary:Game 1 of the best of seven quarter finals is now underway. Puck dropped at 7:35 in front of about 800 people. The Hornets' Mitch Ronan got the game's first penalty for elbowing at 2:40 which they killed off. The Hawk's Devon Richardson received two minutes for roughing at 7:27. Ronan's second penalty of the period was roughing at 10:54. The Hornets couldn't capitalize on two more powerplays, and at the end of the first period, it remains scoreless. The best scoring chances for each club came while shorthanded. The period was costly for the Hornets as they lost Luke Vanderhulst with a leg injury. He had to be helped off the ice. |
