Alliston Hornets asked to play in Hockey Day in Canada tournament

Posted June 30, 2009

The Alliston Hornets have been invited to play in a four team tournament as part of CBC's 10th annual Hockey Day in Canada festivities which next season will be broadcast on January 30, 2010 from Stratford, Ontario.

Clay Birkett, the Hornets director of hockey operations said this afternoon that they're still awaiting final confirmation from the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), but as it stands currently, The Hornets would travel to Stratford, and play Norwich on January 29, while the defending Jr. C champion Essex 73s would play Walkerton. The winners of each game would play on Saturday as part of the broadcast.

"It's quite an honour to be one of four teams asked in Ontario," said Birkett. "I guess success breeds its own rewards. Who would have ever thought five years ago we could have a chance of being on national TV."

Cougars here for home opener

The Hornets will open regular season play in the 2009-2010 season on Sun., Sept. 20 at home against the Schomberg Cougars starting at 6:30 pm.

There are several key changes heading into the new campaign, including a new head coach, Norm Costello, who replaces Darrin Shannon, who stepped down at the end of last season. Additionally, the team is currently in the midst of hiring an assistant coach all in preparation for the Evaluation Camp for rookies July 26th in Alliston.

Camp opens for all players on August 16. The third annual Hornets preseason tournament is also full with 12 teams participating Sept. 11, 12 and 13. Alliston has won it both years.
