Alliston Hornets close in on top spot after Midland upsets Stayner

Posted November 9, 2009

The Alliston Hornets continued to keep the top spot within reach with a pair of wins over the weekend over Fergus and Erin.

Friday night, with back to back meetings against the Devils, the Hornets inflicted all the damage in the first period with five unaswered goals by David Leblanc, Eric Shannon, Randy Cox, Chad Camirand, and Alex Botten.

Breton MacKinnon got the win in net for his second shutout of the season.

Saturday night, Alliston travelled to Erin to hook-up with the Shamrocks, and left with a 4-2 win.

Four of the six goals were scored on specialty teams. Daniel Letour opened the scoring for Alliston at 15:29. That was followed by Cole Parker's powerplay goal at 19:50 to end the first 2-0.

Erin's Reid Parker made it 2-1 at 15:45 of the second on the powerplay for the period's only goal. Pat McCarron restored the two goal lead at 5:19 of the third.

Jed Walmsley scored Erin's second goal on the powerplay to close the gap to 3-2 at 12:56 of the third. That's as close as it would get after McCarron potted his second of the game, shorthanded, at 19:29.

MacKinnon got the win in net to run his league leading record to 9-1.

Midland did Alliston a favour by upsetting the first place Stayner Siskins 4-2 Saturday night to keep them within striking distance.

It's back to back to back for Alliston next weekend starting Friday night with Schomberg in town for a 7:30 start at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre. Saturday it's on the road for a key match with the Penetang Kings at 8 pm, then Sunday night it's back to Fergus for a 7:30 puck drop.

Hornets to host benefit game for CT Scanner

The Alliston Hornets game against the Penetang Kings Sun., Nov. 22 at 6:30 pm at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre will be in support of the CT scanner at Stevenson Memorial Hospital. Proceeds from the game will be donated to the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation's fundraising efforts for the CT scanner. Reserved seating tickets are available in advance on Hornets game nights or at the rec centre's guest services desk. Donations will also be accepted.

Five Hornets named to all-star game roster

This year's Jr. C all-star game between the Georgian Mid Ontario Hockey League and the Western Ontario League will be played on Sun., Nov. 22 in Mt Forest starting at 2 pm.

The Alliston Hornets have five players on the roster led by captain Kyle McDowell, one of four overagers (OA) permitted to play. McDowell will be joined by defencemen Kyle Montpetit, and Cody Rhodes, and upfront by Randy Cox and Mike Campeau. Hornets trainer Chris Pilon will also serve behind the bench. Hornets goaltender Breton MacKinnon, who for the second year in a row leads the league in goaltending statistics, was shutout from the team because of the restrictions on OAs.

And, in a bid to inject more meaning into the annual affair, the leagues have agreed to a two-year experiment whereby the winning side would have home ice advantage when they meet up during the Clarence Schmalz Cup provincial playoffs.
