Posted August 8, 2012

The 17-year-old young offender charged in the June 22 murder of 24-year-old Steve Garnier, made her third court appearance yesterday in Barrie, this time to make formal the first degree murder charge upgrade from the initial second degree.

The accused, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, remains in custody and housed at the Roy McMurtry Youth Centre in Brampton. On July 17, Nottawasaga OPP announced the charges were upgraded to first degree murder and the Crown announced yesterday that they may seek an adult sentence if convicted. She turns 18 in November.

Disclosure of evidence is still pending, and her next court appearance is scheduled for Tues., Sept. 11.
