Public school board to turn over its archives to Simcoe County

Posted May 7, 2014

The County of Simcoe will take ownership and possession of archival records of The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) following a deal reached between the County Archivist and the Director of Education.

In his report to County council seeking approval to execute the agreement, Bruce Beacock, Archivist, explains that the idea was first discussed in 1982.

"For a number of reasons, including the Archives' space limitations, those discussions did not lead to an agreement," explains Mr. Beacock. "The issue was re-visited in 2004, and negotiations resumed in earnest in 2012 when the completion of the Archives' 10,000 sq ft storage addition made the transfer of the Board's records viable."

He notes the County archives in Midhurst will "ensure the long-term preservation of (SCDSB) permanent records in an optimum physical environment, including a fire suppression system unavailable in its own facility. It will also allow unprecedented access to those records in a public archival facility."

The SCDSB is donating the materials, and will have access, as it requires to the records.

"These records constitute a critical component of the historical record.  Transferring their custody and care to the Archives will provide physical security and enhanced access to vital records of the County's social and educational history."
