A dozen portables to open with new AUPS

Posted July 7, 2014

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will add 12 classroom portables to the new Alliston Union Public School (AUPS) site to accommodate at least 165 more students than the three-storey structure's capacity of 507.

The SCDSB, which already allowed for six portables, is seeking an amendment to the site plan agreement with the Town for an additional six, plus 12 more parking spaces.

In a report to trustees last month, John Dance, the Board's Superintendent of Facility Services said projected enrolment increases are driven by new residential development, whose impact should stablize once it's built-out.

"In the short term, the school is able to accommodate all students without undue pressure. Staff will continue to monitor enrolment and utilization and suggest a long term strategy via the annual Capital Planning process."

The $10 million replacement school is located at 211 Church St. N. and is scheduled to open in September. It features 22 classrooms including five Full Day Kindergarten classrooms and one Learning Centre.
