New Alliston Union School expected to open at '135 per cent utilization'

Posted June 2, 2014

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is projecting 672 students will attend Alliston Union Public School when the new building opens in September, which is 165 more than its intended capacity of 507.

"Over the long term, enrolment is expected to continue to increase due to new development in the area," according to John Dance, the Board's Superintendent of Facility Services in his report to the Building and Facilities Standing Committee. "In the short term, the school is able to accommodate all students without undue pressure. Staff will continue to monitor enrolment and utilization and suggest a long term strategy via the annual Capital Planning process."

The three-storey, $10 million facility at 211 Church St. N. includes space to accommodate six portable classrooms.

On June 19 - rescheduled from June 12 which is provincial election day - the AUPS community will mark the closing of its school on Albert Street.
