Posted March 18, 2013

Banting Memorial (BMHS) was Simcoe County's highest ranked public high school for its results in Gr. 9 math and Gr. 10 literacy tests taken in 2012, according to the Fraser Institute's annaul Report Card on Ontario's Secondary Schools posted on its web site on Sunday.

BMHS had a rank of seven out of 10 overall, which is down from 7.6 in 2011, and is the lowest since 2008 when it was 7.3. Provincially, the Alliston high school was ranked 214 out of the 725 in Ontario.

The second largest high school in the County, Banting had 513 students who were eligible to take the Gr. 10 literacy test. Ontario students are not able to graduate from high school without passing it first.

Of the tests written, 20.9 per cent of results fell below the provincial standard which is ranked at two out of four, four exceeding the standard, and one, failing to meet it.

Gr. 9 academic level math averaged three out of four, while the applied level was 2.5. On the literacy test, 84.5 per cent of the full-time equivalent who wrote it, passed. Students who had to write the test again because they had failed previously, had a 68.4 per cent pass rate.

St. Thomas Aquinas in Tottenham had an overall rank of 5.2 out of 10, which put it at 522 out of the 725 schools in Ontario. Gr 9 academic math results averaged 2.9 out of four, while applied was 2.4. The literacy test results showed 72.3 FTE passed, while those taking it again had a 44.8 per cent pass rate.  Of those who tested, 31 per cent fell below the provincial standard.
