Bison put down after it broke free from local farm

Posted September 5, 2012

A bison that escaped from a 13th Line farm Monday morning was put down by its owner according to a brief incident report provided by Nottawasaga OPP. It did not include why the animal had to be killed (nor at this writing could it be confirmed).

The incident occurred Sept. 3 at approximately 9 am, whereby a patrol, "came across a buffalo on the roadway walking west on the 15th Sideroad of New Tecumseth. The owner came out from the 13th Line looking for the animal. The owner dispatched the animal and removed it himself. No further Police action."

Federal regulations outlining the Bison Code of Practice, includes how to carry out the "humane slaughter." .... "In all instances a high-powered rifle must be used because of the thick hair coat and the heavy skull covering the brain."

Bison are not normally mean or aggressive animals, but bison will not hesitate to react, especially when they feel threatened.
