Province confirms new infrastructure funding source

Posted August 18, 2014

The Ontario government announced today that the Community Infrastructure Fund (CIF) will provide $100 million per year in funding for road, bridge, water and wastewater projects to small, rural and northern municipalities with populations under 100,000.

CIF funding was contained in the 2014 budget, and announced this morning as 1,500 municipal representatives from the across the province are gathered in London for the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference. Six members of New Tecumseth council were expected to be in London including mayor Mike MacEachern and deputy mayor Rick Milne (their expenses are covered by Simcoe County), and councillors Bob Marrs, Jamie Smith, Richard Norcross, and Bruce Haire.

The CIF grants Grants must be spent on: capital projects and capital maintenance for the renewal, rehabilitation and replacement of core infrastructure assets (roads, bridges, water and wastewater, including both sanitary and storm-water facilities); and/or the development and implementation of asset management plans (e.g., software, training, inspections).

Expressions of Interest deadline to apply for the grant is Sept. 19. New Tecumseth council has one scheduled meeting left in this term, next Monday. However, mayor MacEachern can call a special meeting to deal with the application if the Town decides to apply for funding.
