Conservative's omnibus budget bill cuts funding to Nottawasaga OPP

Posted June 12, 2012

New Tecumseth, Essa, and Adjala-Tosorontio will have to determine how they will deal with the looming loss of federal government funding that currently pays the cost of two Nottawasaga OPP constables.

The Conservative government's omnibus budget package, which at this hour is tied up in an opposition filibuster in the House of Commons, includes cuts to a program that provides communities with grants to enhance policing services starting in 2013.

Mayor Mike MacEachern told councillors last night that the two policing positions, are part of the regular complement. The complicating factor is the tri-party service contract is up for renewal this year.

We'll be addressing that when we get to the point of the police contract coming forward in order to support that," said mayor MacEachern. "The Province seems to be continuing their support of the funding they're providing but the federal government is removing it, so it's one we have to be concerned about as we move forward."
