Simcoe County cancels electronics collection, contractor staffing problems

Posted August 14, 2019

Simcoe County has cancelled next month's electronics special collection program because its contractor can't keep up with its weekly obligations for curbside waste, organics, and recycling contract.

Electronics collection was scheduled to take place Sept. 16 to Sept. 27 in both County zones.

"These actions are being taken since the County's contractor, Waste Connections, continues to experience challenges with staffing due to labour shortages, drivers reaching their maximum legally permitted hours to operate, and increased summer waste volumes," according to the County's press release. "These issues are compounded by the heat and humidity, among other factors. ... If missed, residents are encouraged to utilize cardboard boxes, plastic storage boxes, and blue or clear plastic bags for overflow recyclables. As always, to reduce issues with odours and contamination of recyclables, cans, bottles and cartons should be rinsed."

It's not the first time the County and its collections contractor have had staffing issues. In 2016, Progressive Waste Solutions had similar problems related to staffing shortages that impacted weekly pick-ups.

Electronics can be dropped off at a County waste management facility free of charge at any time throughout the year during regular operating hours.
