County, Georgian team to study regional food distribution hub

Posted January 31, 2014

Simcoe County and Georgian College are teaming up for Phase 2 of a proposed Regional Food Distribution Hub, which would mirror the Ontario Food Terminal operation in Toronto, for the local agricultural sector.

Georgian College will conduct the research to understand the supply and demand response, followed by a review to determine what model, if any, is appropriate for the County of Simcoe. Results are expected to be available later this spring. Phase one of the study was led by the Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture and provided initial insight into potential opportunities in food distribution activities in the region.

"Food and agriculture play an important role in our economy," said Warden Cal Patterson," in a press release issued this morning. "We look forward to continuing to work with industry stakeholders to find a long-term option to enhance local food distribution opportunities, grow Simcoe County’s economy and support our food and agriculture sectors."

The County food hub would serve as a centralized opportunity for Simcoe County's agricultural community to market their goods, locally.

"Georgian is working closely with the County of Simcoe on this Food Distribution Hub project for two reasons,” according to Georgian College President and CEO MaryLynn West-Moynes. "First, we believe that food and farming are strong contributors to the economic development of Simcoe County. Second, Georgian is in the process of developing a cluster of agriculture and agri-food programs to be delivered in Central Ontario, and we view this sector as a significant growth area for both Georgian and Simcoe County. This is an excellent fit."
