Report on council remunerations to push Simcoe County rates higher in 2015

Posted August 11, 2014

Simcoe County council's governance committee will mull over five options that increase the annual remunerations of the Warden, Deputy Warden, and councillors effective Jan. 1, 2015 which coincides with the new term following the elections in October. A 6th option is status quo.

Currently, the Warden is paid $55,000, plus expenses, use of a car, and office in Midhurst. The deputy warden receives $36,663, councillors are paid $8,479 plus $212 per meeting, and expense claims.

The five options use comparable rates with neighbouring regions, CPI, COLA, unionized rate increases, and an average of the increases.

The smallest of the increases is the comparable rate which would increase the Warden's salary to $60,241; Deputy Warden, $40,156; councillor salary, $9,287, and per diems to $232.

The highest of the options is based on the County of Simcoe's non-union (management) COLA increases, which would raise the Warden's salary to $61,557; Deputy Warden to $41,034; councillor, $9,490 and per diem $237.

The governance committee meets tomorrow following the scheduled County council session, and it's expected a recommendation would be tabled for council's consideration at its next meeting.
