County budget outline looks ahead to next year's tax increase

Posted May 29, 2014

One of the 15 "assumptions" and "directives" of Simcoe County's 2015 budget planning is topped by an estimated tax levy increase of two per cent, whose direct hit would be offset by a projected 1.5 per cent in growth, which then is mixed in with a two per cent inflation factor.

County budget tax increases have been near automatic at the two per cent level for the past several cycles, including 2014, which cost the average residential ratepayer an increase of $6.11 per $100,000 of property assessment, raising $2.7 million in additional taxation revenues for a total of $136.2 million. The overall budget was $403 million.

New Tecumseth ratepayers are the second largest contributors of taxes to the County, tapped for $13.25 million this year. Innisfil was highest at $15.4 million. Essa Township sent $7 million to the County, and Adjala-Tosorontio, $4.9 million.

"Historically the budget is approved in November which has allowed the County to begin issuing tenders and completing budget work earlier in the year," according to a report to County councillors on next week's agenda. "During an election year the budget approval shifts to January of the budget year."
