![]() ![]() MTO to offer senior driver renewal program in AllistonPosted September 20, 2012Deputy mayor Rick Milne announced Monday night that Ontario's Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will begin administering drivers licence tests for seniors 80 years and over who are required to renew every two years, at the Kingsmere Retirement Village in Alliston starting next month. Currently, seniors in the New Tecumseth area travel to Barrie, Orangeville, or Newmarket to take the mandatory vision test, a multiple-choice test on rules of the road and road signs, and take part in a Group Education Session before they can renew their licence. In some instances, they may also be asked to take a road test to have their driving skills assessed. According to the 2011 census data as it related to New Tecumseth's demographics by age, there were 5,170 people 65+ or 18 per cent out of a total population of 30,235. Of those, 625 were aged 85 and over. Mr. Milne said recently that the MTO has been lobbied for the past few months to bring the service back to Alliston, and not just for seniors, but all persons who want to write their driver's licence test. At this post, details of the operation in Alliston were not readily available. More updates as they are confirmed. |
