SMH Foundation turns to eBay to sell its new Honda for fundraiser

Posted January 18, 2013

At approximately 7 pm tonight, Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) will begin taking bids through an eBay auction, for its 2013 Honda Civic Touring Sedan.

To view this ad on eBay when it's activated later this evening, visit the web site, and enter item number 150980901039 in the search box at the top of the eBay home page. Registration will be required to take part in the bidding.

Honda Canada donated the new model in November to mark the automaker's six millionth vehicle built in Alliston. It's to support the foundation's new "It takes you..." fundraising campaign whose proceeds will target operating room improvements.

Until now, SMHF has relied on the time-honoured, go-to, raffle ticket route popular with service clubs and non-profit groups world-wide, for their giveaway fundraisers.

In this turn, the Foundation is moving to the internet through online auction giant eBay, which offers a separate charitable fundraising service that does not take seller fees, and lets the groups keep 100 per cent of the proceeds from their sales.

Selling raffle tickets requires its own human infrastructure, whereas ebay is turn-key and handles the entire transaction, including payment process through PayPal.

In this case, the auction will run through to January 25, and a reserve amount has been set, and there will be a message sent to the bidder indicating whether the "reserve has been met/reserve has not been met." That minimum will not be public.

The winning bidder will have seven days to complete their payment. Paypal accounts can be set up using bank accounts or credit cards. Once confirmed, the new Civic will be delivered for pick-up from "a Honda dealership within Canada, reasonably close to the winner's home, as designated by Honda."
