Citizens apprehend thief stealing from cars in Beeton

Posted February 8, 2010

A 19-year-old of "no fixed address" is facing numerous charges related to theft from vehicles in Beeton.

On Friday, Nottawasaga OPP were called to a Colbourne Crescent address at approximately 2:55 a.m. "where two residents were waiting to turn over to the police, a thief they had caught stealing from cars in their neighbourhood."

"The two local residents were alerted by the family dog of some activity outside of their residence around 2:50 a.m., looked out their window and saw an unknown male on their street sneaking from home to home," according to the press release issued this afternoon. "The witnesses watched as the suspect entered an unattended vehicle parked at a residence on Reynolds Avenue in Beeton at which point the witnesses intervened and subsequently held the suspect until Police arrived."

Numerous items were recovered from the suspect including loose change, a Garmin GPS unit, CD cases and a library CD.

Douglas Ian Elliott is charged with six counts of Theft under $5,000 and one count of Possession Under $5,000 and is scheduled to appear in court in Bradford in April.

"Nottawasaga OPP wants to thank those two residents for their commendable actions with the apprehension of the accused that lead Police to making an arrest and laying charges. It is because of the courageous efforts of these two individuals that several thefts from motor vehicles have now been solved."
