County delays takeover of Essa transit contract

Posted November 14, 2017

Simcoe County's takeover of the public transit contract between Essa and Barrie, which was scheduled to begin January 1, 2018, has instead been pushed back at least six months, requiring the Township and City to extend their deal for an additional year with options to extend for two more years (2019, 2020).

However, the extension will include a clause permitting the County to assume the contract any time within the year.

Barrie provides Essa with Monday to Friday bus routes including: Morning peak service with four round trips from Barrie to Angus/CFB Borden to Barrie; Mid-day service with two round trips from Barrie to Angus/CFB Borden to Barrie; and Evening peak service with four round trips from Barrie to Angus/CFB Borden to Barrie.

The 2018 operating cost is $361,591, supplemented by $45,000 in fare revenues, and $140,000 in Gas Tax grant. Essa's direct contribution is $176,591, of which the Township is requesting a grant from the County to offset some of it.
