Number of married couples with children dropped in New Tecumseth

There were 7,645 couples living in New Tecumseth according to 2011 Census data released this morning which focused on the "Portrait of Families and Living Arrangements in Canada. It's an increase of 7.4 per cent since the 2006 census.

Of those, 3,410 were married with children, which is down 2.2 per cent since 2006. The number of married couples without children grew by 18.8 per cent over the same period to 3,040.

There were 550 couples living common law with children, an increase of 12.2 per cent and 645 common law couples without children, up 10.3 per cent.

The 2011 census pegged New Tecumseth's population at 30,234.

In Adjala-Tosorontio, there were 2,830 couples, down 0.5 per cent since 2006. Of those, 1,365 were married with children, a decrease of 7.2 per cent. And 1,055 were married without children an increase of 2.6 per cent.

The number of common law couples with children was 200, down 14.3 per cent, while common law couples without children numbered 210, a 53.3 per cent increase.

Adjala-Tosorontio was one of three municipalities in the County that experienced a total population decrease between 2006 and 2011, dropping .09 per cent, to 10,603.
