Lab under suspicion tested Town waterPosted February 19In December 2000, the Ministry of Environment released its list of accredited laboratories capable of meeting Ontario's Clean Water Objectives. Fine Analysis Laboratories of Hamilton, was not on it. New Tecumseth, which had been sending samples of its drinking water to the company for testing since 1996, severed that tie last winter. For the past year, Lakefield Research in Peterborough has been performing the task. However, a link to Fine remained in place until last Monday when the Ministry of Environment told the Town to find a new lab to test its sewage effluent samples. It did, Maxxam Analytical of Mississauga. The reason: Fine Analysis, a drug and environmental services laboratory is under investigation for allegations of a conspiracy to forge certificates of analysis for 42 clients. On February 12, dozens of police and technicians poured over the company files and lab reports searching for doctored documents and other evidence of an alleged criminal conspiracy. The investigation is focusing on a situation within the company that led to the forging of drug, soil and water test results. Fine's clients include municipalities, landfill operators, drug, vitamin, and cosmetic companies across the country. George Degroot, New Tecumseth's director of public works told Free Press Online this afternoon that they were confident the Town's drinking water results were never compromised. And if they were, any problems would have been detected inhouse. "We do our own internal testing," said Mr. Degroot. "That's how we keep on top of things. That's how we know." |
