The early morning blaze on August 19, 2016 destroyed the century old mill, required the evacuation of nearby residents, and smouldered for days afterwards.

Nottawasaga OPP media officer Harry Lawrenson told Free Press Online the arrested male "was always on our radar as a person of interest, so it was the tenacity of the investigators to piece this puzzle together. There was not one thing in particular but many different pieces that led to the suspect's arrest."

Lawrenson also noted "there is no evidence to connect him to any other fires that occurred around that time" in areas near Banting Memorial High School.''

Aaron Gareau, 23, of Tottenham is charged with Arson and Mischief, Endangering Life. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
