New Tecumseth councillors approved $147,500 in dispersements for annual
grants and donations covering three categories: General ($27,000);
Community Events ($30,500); and Arts, Culture and Tourism ($90,000).
In all, 47 applications were received by the Town, totalling $184,475
in requests. South Simcoe Arts Council was the single largest
receipient, scoring $30,000 combined. South Simcoe Railway will receive
its annual amount of $25,000, while the Gibson Centre's allocation
dropped from $25,000 in the past years, to $19,500.
Gibson Centre board president Janette Vander Zaag told councillors last
night that she hoped the reduction did not "set a precedent where our
funding is in jeopardy." She asked for council to reconsider boosting
the arts and culture component back to $100,000, which has been
referred to next year's budget deliberations.
