Habitat to build third home in Alliston, info session for applicants Sept. 8

Posted September 2, 2010

New Tecumseth's chapter of Habitat for Humanity has selected a building lot at 32A Dufferin Street for its next affordable new housing project.

In a press release announcing its next build, Bob Caughey, Chair of the New Tecumseth Chapter, said construction of the single family home will begin next spring.

"We will incorporate as many energy-efficient features into the house as our budget will allow and ensure that the dwelling is aesthetically compatible with the immediate neighbourhood," according to Mr. Caughey.

Habitat is a charitable organization, recognized world-wide for its work to provide shelter to those normally unable to afford the traditional means of home ownership.

"The family selection process is very thorough and focuses on three key criteria: the need for adequate housing, the ability of the selected family to repay the mortgage and the willingness of the family to participate in the construction and other community volunteering activities."

Application forms for prospective Habitat families are available at the Alliston Habitat Restore at 239 Church Street South, local libraries, Chambers of Commerce and Royal Bank branches.

An Information session for applicants will be held at the D. A. Jones Public Library, 42 Main Street, Beeton on September 8th 2010, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Family selection volunteers will be on hand to help with the process and offer advise.

Habitat is also looking for volunteers for all aspects of the project including committee work as well as the actual construction. Local businesses will also be approached to share their expertise and provide construction materials for the project.

"We have always been heartened by the generousity of the individuals, businesses, media and local government of New Tecumseth in the past and have confidence that our community will continue to support our efforts to give a helping hand to our deserving neighbours."
