Local Habitat chapter issues urgent call for volunteers

Posted January 24, 2013

With three builds under its belt since forming in 2002, the New Tecumseth Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is in jeopardy of folding without an infusion of more volunteer support.

"We have reached a point where we need to seek renewal and thus are appealing to the community that has always been so supportive," according to a statement issued this week by the organization. "Without additional Board and Committee members, the New Tecumseth Chapter of Habitat for Humanity will cease, and turn over activity to our Affiliate, Habitat for Humanity - Huronia (Barrie). Our current Board members desperately want to maintain a local Chapter, but cannot continue without additional new volunteers."

Habitat built its first home in Alliston in 2004, a second in 2009, and the third in 2011.

"For each of these families, a new home has meant a fresh start in life. This has been accomplished with the support of the community. Our volunteers who helped build, our financial donors, and the assistance from local businesses, the Town of New Tecumseth, and trades people, have consistently inspired us."

Those interested in helping out can contact the chapter at 705-434-3375 and leave a message or email info@habitatnewtecumseth.ca . Regardless of what happens locally, it will not impact "the successful functioning of the local Restore" on Church Street South.
