Hornets open camp tomorrow night in unfamiliar circumstances at NTRC

Posted August 11, 2014

For the first time since the 2007-08 season, the Alliston Hornets will open training camp not as defending GMOHL champions, but with the goal of unseating the Penetang Kings, who ended the Hornets title streak at six in last season's finals.

About 60 players, including those who made it through July's rookie camp, will be on the NTRC ice tomorrow night from 9 pm to 10 and 10 to 11 pm, and again Aug. 14, and the Rookie game in Alliston, Aug. 18, at 7:30 pm, against Caledon.

Hornets head coach Clay Birkett, who makes his first foray behind the bench to start the season after taking over the squad last January, said he expects to pare down the team to 23 by the time camp ends following the annual Alliston tournament Sept. 5-7.

"This is going to be one of the most competitive camps that we have had in the past 10 years," said Birkett via email. "It is an exciting time of year and the next four weeks leading up to our tournament is going to be very interesting to say the least."

The team was busy over summer bolstering veteran presence with the addition of  Nick Arcan from the Penetang Kings, Gianluca Pallotta, and Matt Taylor from the Mt. Forest Patriots.

"I am sure the returning players and new ones to our organization will feel they want to be league champions again this year. That is our goal when camp opens tomorrow," said Birkett. "We want our crown back."
