The Alliston Hornets and Stayner Siskins will meet in the GMOHL
semifinal round for the first time since 2009, with Game 1 slated for
Friday night at the NTRC.
While the Hornets made quick work of the Fergus Devils in four games,
Stayner reeled off three wins in a row to eliminate the Erin Shamrocks
in seven games, after being down 3-1 in the series.
Alliston hasn't played since Game 4 on Feb. 13, while Stayner won 7-0
Sunday night to clinch their spot in the semifinals.
Stayner and Alliston have met each other in league playoffs three times
in the last six seasons. In 2009, Alliston swept the semi-final
meeting; in 2011 the teams met in the league finals, which Alliston
needed all seven games to win it; and the finals rematch in
2012, was also a four game sweep won by Alliston.
In the first round, Alliston scored more goals, 25, in four games, than
Stayner scored in 7, 24, while the Hornets gave up 10, and Siskins, 16.
The sides come in on opposite ends of the special teams rankings.
Alliston boasts the number one powerplay converting on 33 per cent of
its extra man chances, while Stayner ranks 7th, scoring six times on 39
powerplays. But the Siskins are a league playoff best on the penalty
kill, giving up only three goals in 36 shorthanded situations, while
Alliston has been shorthanded 15 times, conceding four goals.
Hornets coach Clay Birkett said he won't decide on his starting
goaltender until after Wednesday night's practice. Connor Ryckman,
whose playing in his first Jr. C playoff round is 3-0 with a 1.68 GAA
while teammate Tyler Brindle, who led last year's squad to the
title, is 2-1 with a 4.91 GAA. The issue, said Birkett this morning is
that Brindle is undefeated against Stayner in regular season.
"I am fortunate to have two excellent goalies," wrote Birkett via
email. "Brindle 4-0 vs Stayner this year but Ryc's is very hot as well.
A good situation for a coach to have."
Preparing for Stayner is a little different then Schomberg but
basically the same game plan," said Birkett. "The message is simple on
my side. Effort, discipline and excellent special teams. We are healthy
and confident moving forward."
