Hornets drop Schmalz Cup opener in overtime

Posted March 21, 2013

Conner Patton scored his second goal of the game last night 47 seconds into overtime to give his Walkerton Hawks the 4-3 win over the Alliston Hornets to take a 1-0 best of seven quarterfinal Schmalz Cup series lead. The Hornets hadn't lost an opening game to Walkerton since 2010 - Alliston won that series in seven.

The teams are meeting for the sixth consecutive time in the quarterfinal round, and last night in Walkerton, the Hornets had leads of 2-1 on goals by Mike Campeau and Tanner Dockerty, after one, and 3-2 after two, including Campeau's second.

But Adam Alexander's powerplay goal at 8:10 of the third tied the game which is how it ended in regulation, before Patton's marker sealed the night.

Tyler Brindle, making his first start in the OHA Cup round, went the distance in the loss.

The teams now move to the NTRC Friday night for Game 2, puck drop at 8 pm. And a quick turnaround for Game 3 Saturday night in Walkerton, 8:30 pm start.
