All hands on deck for snow, ice clearing

Posted January 14, 2014

New Tecumseth's Director of Public Works told councillors last night that every piece of equipment available has been out trying to keep sidewalks and storm drains clear of snow and ice build-up.

Chad Horan, in reply to deputy mayor Rick Milne's question about the Town's clearing efforts, said the significant snow accumulation, ice storm, and the milder temperatures made it difficult for crews to keep up with the water ponding from melting snow, and freeze-overs that made walking treacherous.

"The large volume of snow we got, especially the sidewalks and build up of the banks has created a challenge for us to be able to maintain and clear," said Mr. Horan. "With the mild temperatures, you almost get little runways of rivers that run through them so all the sidewalk machines are out, applied material to all the sidewalks; where we can we've opened them up with the sidewalk machines or large equipment to drain it off. We're hoping with another day of mild temperatures it'll help thaw some of that ice pack and then temperatures should drop Wednesday to more seasonal which will help dry those areas up and should improve things quite a bit."
