Councillors 'will continue to spend money they do not have'

to the editor,

Posted January 11, 2013

Hopefully the proposed 8-9 per cent increase in property taxes will jolt our disaffected zombie population up from the glow of their cell phone screens as it is just a sign of things to come.

It proves that deferring the reality of a fiscal mismanagement nightmare is starting to bear fruit.

What's going to happen when all of those debentures need to be paid off for all the shiny new toys the council has bought. And now the council wants even more spending on full-time firefighters. I wonder if they used the same consultant to decide if New Tecumseth actually needed two aerial fire trucks to serve our small community?

What happens when the development charges do not cover the expenditures they have planned and spent? Simple, you will be paying even higher taxes which would drive out business and create a cyclical effect of lower tax income for the town, and eventually a municipal default.

And from what I have been reading, council has not yet considered any budget cuts but they will continue to spend money they do not have so they can subsidize things like a diesel train railway to nowhere, arts, roller derby, lacrosse, dog training, dance instruction, Jack and Jills etc etc.

So when you look at your next tax bill you know where to direct your anger, straight at the council of "fiscal mismanagement."

Now, when is the council going to build and subsidize my local race car track, or do we first still need another arena?
