'horrendous mistake' to grant exclusive rights at NTRC

to the editor,

Posted September 12, 2012

Richard Norcross operating the Hornets Nest, although perceived as a conflict of interest, should not be seen as such.

If I recall correctly, did the Town not have any other takers on the restaurant space in the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre (NTRC) when it was first put out there? At that time, I believe Mr. Norcross declared a conflict of interest and noted it as such removing himself from the decision to grant him the space in the Rec Centre.

Where the ball was dropped in this whole debacle was the terms to which the agreement was made. Allowing Mr. Norcross, or whomever was to operate the restaurant, control over Liquor for the whole building was a horrendous mistake. That excluded the community room from being a viable option for fundraising events such as a Jack and Jill, Wedding reception, Baseball League Banquets etc. So it is no surprise that there was a lack of demand for the community room which led its conversion as fitness centre.

Also, as a result of this horrendous blunder, community groups now see the Memorial Arena as the only option for such events, increasing the outcry of its potential closure.

Too bad the needs of the people weren't addressed when the NTRC was initially built, or the expansion to the Tottenham Centre, or when bucket loads of money were spent to rebuild the Rotary pool. We needed a proper plan communicated and implemented for the future of everything involved. Or did we just waste a pile of money on inaccurate third party studies?
