'Elections are to give you an illusion of choice'to the editor,
Posted June 18, 2014
In regard to Bob Young's letter posted here yesterday, once again, post election, the finger waggers like to scold the non-voters for their perceived lack of civic responsibilities, with things like "if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about the government!"
But "freeloaders"? The implication is that those who choose
not to vote do not pay taxes.
The fact is that elections are to give you an illusion of choice. The late, great George Carlin said it best. In the case of the recent provincial election there was a choice between staying with a corrupt and inefficient party and another which threatened to cut back a lot of jobs. Some choice, eh?
Actually, I believe a 49 per cent voter turn-out is about average.
