'Some citizens seem to hold more importance than others'Posted August 31, 2010to the editor, I find the comments by council, and in particular Ward 5 councillor Jim Stone, to be very humorous as it relates to noise issues for Simcoe County's new public works depot and showing concern for the citizens in the area of the facility. Where is this concern for the residents on Kerr Blvd and Cunningham Dr in Alliston? We have been fighting with the Town and Gibson Transport for almost a year now due to their expansion of the PGW building and the addition of a roadway between our houses and the building. Our sleep is constantly disrupted and we can't even hold a conversation on our deck when trucks go by, but the council doesn't care about us. I have been in constant contact with our elected officials. The Mayor wouldn't even respond to our concerns and the Deputy Mayor simply gives us the old "we'll look into it" response. The latest issue happened almost six weeks ago now as a grader was outside our bedroom window at 5 am doing work on Gibson's property. Our Deputy Mayor gave the standard answer and after several emails and conversations with engineers for the Town over a four week period, I received the obligatory "we will continue to investigate the issue." Absolutely nothing has happened. The fact that neither the building nor the noise meets any of the Town's by-laws doesn't seem to matter until Mr Gibson asks for his security deposit back. We are not able to sleep with our windows open and even with them closed we are awakened by the noise. I am hopeful that the lack of sleep for the residents in this area doesn't lead to something more serious, such as falling asleep at the wheel while driving, huge lawsuit. All citizens of this town should be entitled to a restful night's sleep and the representation of their elected officials without bias. I don't feel this is the case as some citizens seem to hold more importance than others. Garrett English |
