Councillors should not be in business with the Town

to the editor,

Posted September 17, 2012

While I can agree with some of what Evan Bailey mentioned in his letter last week, I disagree with his assertion that it's okay for a councillor to enter into a business arrangement with the Town, even if they declare a conflict of interest.

It just creates too many opportunities for political trade-offs, 'if you support me on this contract I'll support you on yours while we all declare conflict at the right time.'

Of course I don't think that has happened here, this is simply a case of straight forward incompetence on the Town's part, but why as a municipality should we even leave ourselves open to the kind of potential conflicts inherent in these sorts of arrangements?
