Hopes Banting Foundation finds a way to assist with expenses

Posted June 11, 2012

to the editor,

Having lived with type 1 diabetes since the age of 8, I am well aware of how expensive the disease is, and what a financial burden it puts on families and individuals.

I am lucky enough to have health insurance through work, but that runs out before the end of the year and I am forced to pay the last two months out of pocket.

The cost of Insulin and Blood testing strips is approximately $4,000 per year, a hefty sum for those with limited incomes. Add to that the medications required for illnesses and additional health care expenses related to diabetes (heart pills, cholesterol medication, thyroid medication, specialty foot care), and the costs are astronomical.

We tend to try to cut back on some of the required medications, cutting pills in half, testing less often than we should, not seeing Chiropodists for foot care, just to save some money to afford the insulin.

Hopefully the new Banting Foundation will provide the means to obtain financial support for those living with diabetes, allowing us to be able to afford the necessary provisions just to stay alive.

The cut backs by OHIP and the constant price increases by the pharmaceutical companies is shortening our life span and affecting our quality of life.

I sincerely hope the Banting Foundation does not only focus on the menu planning and education aspect of this life altering and life threatening disease, but is also able to find some way to assist with the incredible expense.

Beeton
