Hopes Banting Foundation finds a way to assist with expensesPosted June 11, 2012to the editor, Having lived with type 1 diabetes since the age of 8, I am well aware of how
expensive the disease is, and what a financial burden it puts on
families and individuals. The cost of Insulin and Blood testing strips is approximately $4,000 per year, a hefty sum for those with limited incomes. Add to that the medications required for illnesses and additional health care expenses related to diabetes (heart pills, cholesterol medication, thyroid medication, specialty foot care), and the costs are astronomical. We
tend to try to cut back on some of the required medications, cutting
pills in half, testing less often than we should, not seeing
Chiropodists for foot care, just to save some money to afford the
insulin. The
cut backs by OHIP and the constant price increases by the
pharmaceutical companies is shortening our life span and affecting our
quality of life. Cassandra Henderson, |
