'Peter Principle' catches up to New Tecumseth council

to the editor,

Posted October 22, 2012

Has the "Peter Principle" finally been achieved by our town council and staff? Have they breached the final barrier to attain group incompetence? Is it possible this group could sell a piece of land that had been used for many years to store road salt on it, without doing a basic environmental study on the soil condition before selling it? Then having the sale go south when it's discovered the soil is contaminated?

Then they collectively endear themselves to the "Peter Principle" when they go out and use the funds from this sale and other future town owned land sales to purchase another group of properties in Beeton.

The land purchased is purportedly to build another rink in Beeton. Yep, Beeton which is famous for having a dysfunctional minor hockey organization and is the home turf of Councillor Richard Norcross.

This is the same group now attempting to purchase the Gibson Centre which for over 100 years was used as an industrial site. An industrial site which was used to manufacture, store, sell, and ship industrial products. An industrial site where  trucks fueled by diesel/gasoline were parked. An industrial site where in all probability diesel fuel and gas tanks were in place on the property.

Our town council wants to purchase the Gibson Centre without the benefit of an environmental soil study? Surely they cannot be that stupid?

Oops, I forgot this is the same group that got sucked into the Richard Norcross/Hornets Nest contract at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre. I guess I just answered my own question: They are that stupid.

Editor's Note: Mayor Mike MacEachern provided the following information this morning: "A Phase 1 and 2 ESA was completed in 1993. Clean up undertaken in 1995. A phase 1 ESA Update was completed in 2001. The conclusion was that there are no significant issues. A new update would be proposed as is the case in any Town acquisition of property should the Town ultimately decide to acquire the property."
