Fears council will ban election signs completely
to the editor,
December 10, 2013
The change to election signage policy is preposterous,
petty-minded and ridiculous on a week when all the world mourns the
passing of Nelson Mandela, a patron saint of freedom and democracy
around the globe, but falls on deaf ears here in our council chambers
in New Tecumseth.
What is it that could not be accomplished by asking property
owners who complain about signs on the Town's road allowance to lodge
their concerns with the Town, and then send out an email or a phone
call to the particular candidate to inform them of the complaint.
The candidate may take the opportunity to speak with the
property owner and convince the same to allow the sign to remain or for
the candidate to remove the sign.
What mean-spirited council group we have. So hungry for their
rights and privileges if re-elected that they cannot join in an open,
democratic election without pulling this stunt. Thank-you Councillor
Fran Sainsbury who did not support this childish motion.
To end on a note of caution, if this same council is
re-elected or a majority of them, then in the next municipal election
we may see election signs totally banned as they have been in some of
our neighbouring municipalities.
