Patterson Street deferral was the right choice

Posted August 31, 2010

to the editor,

While I applaud Ward 4 Councillor Richard Norcross's attempt to repair a section of road that is in dire need of work, I have to wonder why he was asking for repairs from Cedar to Stewart?

The section of Patterson Street most in need of repair is from Stewart Street to Lilly Street. Maybe as Councillor Barb Huson noted, Council members need to actually visit the streets they want repaired.

While I agree that the road is currently in a disastrous state, it has been that way for many years already. This repair should have been tied in with the Town's annual budget and not added ad hoc at the last minute with fiscal responsibility being left to the next council should the sale of the Town land fall through.

It is decisions like these that lead to over spending and deficits in the future. Budgets are created for a reason and I donŐt believe that it is wise to spend a potential anticipated surplus on more work when we already have budget shortfalls and deficits in so many other town funded areas.

The members of Council that chose to defer this decision to the next council where those responsible for the project will have a say, were right to do so.

Saddled with debt, now more then ever, New Tecumseth needs to vote for councillors who will be fiscally responsible while also maintaining the best service to the community.
