Good time to consider sale of healthier foods at NTRC

to the editor,

Posted September 25, 2012

With all of this talk about food concessions at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre (NTRC), it brought back my personal feelings about food/diet.

Why are recreation centres serving such poor nutritional choices? Aren't they supposed to be places to get fit and healthy? Fries, nachos, chicken wings, alcohol, candy, etc. equals junk food.

You could argue that it is tradition, that these "treats" are being offered as an incentive for people to come and spend time exercising/socializing. However I have seen an alternative.

In Whitehorse they have a wonderful recreation centre. I fell in love with it not only because of the great ice/pool facilities (yes, that is another issue, swimming can be done by a larger demographic, but they are expensive to maintain/staff) but the first thing I noticed when I walked in was that I wasn't barraged by the smell of rancid fried food.

Did they have food for sale? Yes, they had a deal with a well-known restaurant chain that offered subs & salads for those who were hungry, much healthier and the space was leased out on a contract. They also had a few vending machines, but these didn't add nasty smells to the entranceway. No smoking was allowed on site, so that wasn't another gauntlet to run prior to getting to my destination.

I had hopes during the construction of the NTRC that if there was going to be food served, that healthier options were going to be considered. Perhaps now?
