Beeton Foodland boosts supply of local goods, energy efficiency

Ken and Bonnie Pratt and the staff of Beeton Foodland are proud to announce we have achieved our three summer goals to make Beeton Foodland a deeper partner in the move to local marketing, sustainability in effects on the environment and reducing our waste footprint.

The three-prong approach was piloted with our service suppliers co-operation.

First with the help from Peter Sgarbossa and his forwarding thinking operations team of Sobeys FOODLAND banner, Colin Maughn and Leo McGinty of the Power Stream Electric Utility and Ivan Laver of Central Ontario Electric we have completely revamped the entire store with energy efficient fluorescent bulbs and LED lighting in all of our freezer and display cases. By doing this we will have reduced our energy footprint for that portion of our usage by 75 per cent.

Secondly, we also have installed in partnership with NAWM an organic waste program that turns most organic waste from our operations into a methane gas producer that will then be used as heating fuel.

And finally we are back with a supplier of local milk. We are very happy to be selling Miller's Dairy 'Fresh Jersey Milk.'  Sold in glass bottles, it is milk from Jersey cows, which not only looks like the milk of old but tastes like milk of old. There is a $2 deposit on the bottle but once you make your initial purchase the milk is on a level playing field with conventional Dairy offerings. Some sampling will be done in conjunction with the Beeton Fall Fair Sept. 14,15,16.

This brings another component to our buy local-shop local goal. We now have Potatoes from Dorsey Farms in Beeton, Honey from Creekside Honey also from Beeton, Fresh Organic Ontario Garlic from Mulmer Farms and Alliston Creamery Butter.

We now challenge the leaders of Simcoe County to come up with a recycling program for Commercial Retail locations to even deepen our ability to reduce the garbage footprint.

This is an ongoing pet project for us since being challenged five years ago by Ashley, who works in our deli department, who asked, 'What are you doing to make the environment sustainable for your grandchildren'?

Proudly local, proudly engaged and proudly small town Beeton.

Ken Pratt,
Ken & Bonnie's Beeton Foodland
