'Perhaps he would rather have more kids wandering the streets'Posted September 2, 2010to the editor, Gord McInnes has been making silly comments about the Town's debt. The bulk of the debt was incurred to pay for public works, roads and recreational facilities. Which would he prefer? No toilets? No paved roads? Or perhaps he would rather have more kids wandering the streets with nothing to do? All of the long term debt has been borrowed for capital assets which will last a long time. Common sense dictates that they should be paid for over time by those who are using them. If we were to finance roads, for example, out of current taxes, there would be an immediate tax increase of several per cent but the benefit of those roads would be enjoyed by residents for many years.
