Time for Town to put blue bins for plastic bottles in public parks

Posted September 18, 2008

to the editor,

In the news recently I have been hearing about how companies don't want to make and distribute plastic bottles anymore due to the lack of recycling by the public.

Also, there are communities considering bans on the sale of plastic bottles in public places. I recycle everything. But that's not my point. What I am writing about is recently I have noticed something very odd, that I hope the Town will correct and that is why are there no blue bins for plastic bottles in the parks?

I am a baseball player so during a tournament, water is always at hand for the players as is are the sports drinks. All of them in plastic bottles, but no where to put the empties except in the garbage bin.

Sure, I could keep it in my bag until I get home to recycle, but not everyone wants to do that. I was wondering why no one has thought to put blue bins at the diamonds or throughout the town? Now I don't mean just a little blue box that can be picked up and tossed around by people. I'm talking about either a blue garbage bin with a lid or like in Toronto where they have a bin with two slots, one for garbage and one for recyclables, scattered about. In Wasaga Beach, they have beside the garbage bins, blue cages with recyclable bags in them.

If the Town provide people the access to a recycle bin, most people will use it. Of course, not everyone will but hey, it is a start.

This would divert some of the plastic bottles from landfill. I think that this could be something that the town should consider about and put into action.
