Alliston Rotary Pool, McCarroll Park secure stimulus funds

Town's share about $1 million

Posted July 3, 2009

Rebuilding this region's only outdoor municipal public pool in Alliston wasn't a planned expenditure but then that's one of the key criteria for scoring two-thirds infrastructure funding from the federal and provincial governments.

So today, in a photo-op tour across the riding, (Collingwood, Stayner, Lisle) Simcoe Grey MP Helena Guergis stopped by the Rotary Pool in Alliston to announce that New Tecumseth would receive $993,000 - half federal, and half Ontario - toward the estimated $2.9 million to replace the outdoor Alliston Rotary Pool, and playground equipment replacement and new surface material estimated total cost of $173,250 at McCarroll Park in Alliston.

To tap those funds, the Town would be obligated to contribute about $994,000 towards the pool and $57,750 for the park, which when completed would be fully accessible.

The Town's funding source has not been identified, or even approved by council. The projects would have to be substantially completed before March 31, 2011

The pool rebuild and McCarroll Park were among the 10 projects New Tecumseth applied for funding. They were number one and two on the priority list provided to meet the strict conditions attached to the funds.

The five decades old gift to the former Town of Alliston by the Alliston Rotary Club, when filled holds about 550,000 gallons inside its 30,000 sq. ft. space but leaks 20,000 gallons of chlorinated water per day. Last year's Recreation Master Plan recommended it be closed when a new publicly owned indoor pool is built.

According to the application, the Rotary Pool project includes replacement of pumps, filters, guard office, change rooms, showers, pool fence, and pool bottom, estimated total cost $2,981,605 and Town share would be $993,868.

New Tecumseth was the only community in Simcoe Grey that didn't get infrastructure funding in a previous round of stimulus funds. The Banting homestead, and several road and hard service projects in each of the urban areas, were left off the list.
