At approximately 1 pm yesterday afternoon, Nottawasaga OPP were
dispatched to an apartment unit at 97 Nelson Street West in Alliston
where the resident was reported walking around outside the residence,
carrying what appeared to a neighbour to look like an old fashioned
long gun.
By the time police arrived on scene, the elderly man had gone back
inside. OPP blocked off the immediate area, and over the ensuing
minutes, made their way toward the apartment around the back of the
rooming house, where the male cooperated and was arrested without
incident.
He was transported to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, where he is
being held for a mental health assessment.
Not long after the arrest, a natural gas odor was detected coming from
the apartment, which triggered a response from Station 1 fire, and
Enbridge to deal with it. The stove was left on.
Police employed its canine unit to search the apartment and turned up
11 rifles and shotguns, and boxes of ammunition. There are no charges
pending. And no further details were provided at this post.
