Posted September 4, 2019

Two citizens used their vehicles to box in a fleeing SUV yesterday and then physically restrained the driver from taking off again after he struck a pedestrian and other parked cars in a Bradford parking lot.

South Simcoe Police reported this afternoon they were called to the scene on Holland Street West shortly before noon but the suspect vehicle fled "in a dangerous manner" northbound on Innisfil 10th Sideroad towards Highway 89.

"Two witnesses boxed in the SUV at the intersection and physically restrained the driver," according to police. "The witnesses were assaulted by the driver and his female passenger before police arrived. The driver was arrested for failing to stop after an accident and impaired operation. The passenger was arrested for assault. PSD Nitro, who is trained in narcotics detection, searched the suspect vehicle and located a quantity of white powder believed to be a drug."

The 29-year-old male driver from New Lowell is charged with: Operation While Impaired; Dangerous Operation; Failure to stop after an accident; Failure or refusal to comply with demand; Possession of drugs; Assault; Breach of recognizance; and Breach of probation order.
His 30-year-old female passenger from New Lowell is charged with: Possession of drugs; and two counts of Assault.

The pedestrian struck by the vehicle was treated in hospital for minor injuries and released. The two who subdued the driver, were not injured. All of the vehicles involved sustained minor damage.
