At this post, there were four candidates who have filed their nomination to run for a New Tecumseth council seat on Oct. 27th.

Deputy mayor Rick Milne was first out of the gate, stepping up to run for mayor, a position he was elected to in the former Town of Alliston prior to amalgamation. He was interim mayor of the new Town in 1991, and was elected mayor in 1993.

Ward 2 councillor Jamie Smith, first elected in 2003, is vying to become deputy mayor. Mr. Smith, is winding down his downtown Alliston law practice, which he has operated since 1975. Glen O'Leary this morning signed up to run for deputy mayor. Mr. O'Leary is in the fire systems business.

And, former two-term Tottenham councillor Jess Prothero, has registered to run in Ward 8.

Including the mayor and deputy mayor, New Tecumseth is governed by a 10-member council spread throughout eight wards. Nomination day is Sept. 12 between 9 am and 2 pm.

Anyone running for office can not raise or spend money on their campaign until they have filed nomination papers. The fee to file a nomination is $200 to run for head of council, and $100 for all other positions. This fee must be paid to the clerk at the time you hand in your nomination form.

The following people are disqualified from being elected to municipal office:
any person who is not eligible to vote in the municipality;
an employee of a municipality who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence
and resigned;
a judge of any court;
an MP, an MPP or a Senator; and
an inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution.

School board elections also take place on Oct. 27th. Candidates for public and separate school board positions also register with the municipal clerk's office.
