OnStar worked as advertised to track stolen car from Alliston

Posted February 17, 2010

OnStar technology in GM vehicles helped Nottawasaga OPP locate car stolen from an Alliston parking lot Monday night. The suspect however had already fled the scene when police arrived and found the vehicle abandoned in a ditch.

Police were called to a Victoria Street parking lot on February 15 at approximately 7:45 p.m., to deal with the reported incident.

"An officer attended the parking lot and met with the complainant who revealed that he had parked at the rear of the restaurant there, leaving his 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, (...) and entered the premise. The complainant returned about five minutes later to discover his car missing," according to the press release. "The complainant did confess that the keys had been left in the ignition and driver door unlocked."

OnStar, which uses among other features, GPS tracking, pinpointed its location at Sir Frederick Banting Drive just north of John W. Taylor Drive in Alliston.

"When the officer arrived, the vehicle was recovered from the west ditch, no apparent damage, abandoned by the thief. Central Region ERT (Emergency Response Team) members and the OPP Canine Unit were called to the scene where they conducted a canine track but did not locate the suspect."
