SCDSB approves $533 million budget

Posted May 29, 2014

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) trustees approved a $533 million operating budget for 2014-15, last night, an increase of 2.77 per cent over last year. There are no education tax implications attached to the spending package because those rates are established by the provincial government.

The board expects $445.4 million in general purpose grants and $76.8 million in special purpose funding, and $11.3 million in "other" including full day kindergarten funding, and tuition fees.

The SCDSB is projecting average daily enrolment at its elementary schools will be 35,130, an increase of 3,766 over the current term, while Secondary school enrolment is estimated to be 16,348, a drop of approximately 200 students. And those patterns are reflected in the staffing levels, as the board has budgeted for 2,367 full-time equivalent (FTE) grade school teachers, an increase of 114 over the current year. Conversely, there are 1,136 high school FTE, down from 1,157.

Overall, the board has budgeted for 5,319 FTE employees at a cost of $458.6 million, an increase of about $14 million over last year.

For local schools, planned capital expenditures include parking lot construction and cooling tower replacement at Tecumseth South Central PS, and continued expansion of Tech shops at Banting Memorial. The new Alliston Union Public School opens in September, and its current building closes for good at the end of June.
