Jaffer pleads guilty to careless driving, fined other charges dropped

Posted March 9, 2010

Rahim Jaffer was fined $500 this morning after pleading guilty to careless driving in an Orangeville courtroom.

According to published accounts including CBC News, Crown attorney Marie Balogh, "after careful review" withdrew impaired and cocaine possession charges "because there were significant legal issues and no reasonable prospect of conviction."

Ontario Court Justice Doug Maund is quoted telling Mr. Jaffer, 37, "I'm sure you can recognize a break when you see one."

In addition to the fine, CBC reports he will also make a $500 contribution to charity.

"I'm pleased," CBC quotes Mr. Jaffer. "I'm relieved. Its been a long period that its carried on."

He was stopped for speeding through Palgrave Sept. 10, 2009, and from that came his arrest for alleged impaired driving and cocaine possession.

The former Edmonton area Conservative MP is married to Simcoe Grey MP Helena Guergis, Minister of State Status of Women.
